What is the difference between a town home and a condo?

I know that with apartments you rent them. With town homes and condos you own them. What exactly is the difference between town homes and condos?

“Townhome” and “Condo” are forms of ownership.

Generally speaking, when you own a condo, you don’t own the land. When you own a townhome, you do own the land.

Both come in various forms of construction. In other words, it is possible to own a “detached” condo. This means the structure is not attached to any other structure but the land the structures sit on is owned by a homeowners association or even someone else.

Typically, the homeowner association is responsible for the exterior maintenance of a condo while the homeowner is responsible for the exterior maintenance of a townhome.
